WATER STORAGE PROJECT

WATER EMERGENCY!!!

The school continues to have a water emergency

TOO MUCH WATER: The construction of new homes erected further up the hill from the school has resulted in a graded dirt road that channels rain water directly toward school property. During the rainy season (which begins in August) tons of water rushes down the hillside which in the past has washed away stones, dirt, bricks and even mortar from building foundations on campus, and flooded portions of the girl’s dormitory and latrine.  We have constructed a retaining wall at the top of the campus property along with substantial trenches to divert the water around the buildings; draining in the fields below.

Here are photos of the new wall and water trenches.

New Water TankNOT ENOUGH WATER:  When the rainy season is over, thousands of liters of water must be purchased from a public utility pipe for cooking, hand washing, drinking and laundry for over 500 people at the school. The water bill is a large portion of their monthly budget.

THE SOLUTION:  A WATER STORAGE SYSTEM—WE NEED YOUR HELP TO FINANCE IT

In consultation with a new Indian friend who is an architect, we identified a plan by which the rain water can be collected and stored for times when water is scarce. It involves saving the rushing rain water  that is now being diverted into the fields into underground storage tanks that will hold the water until it is needed in the dry season. Additional roof gutters to guide water storage tank on each building is another important piece of the project
